Dr. Grant Jacobson Completes Advanced Training in Companion Animal Pain Management

The Hometown Veterinarian is proud to share that Dr. Grant Jacobson, has successfully completed Module II of the WSAVA Certificate in Pain Management, earning a certificate of completion through this internationally recognized educational program.

This advanced coursework is developed by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) and is based primarily on the WSAVA Global Pain Council Guidelines for the recognition, assessment, and treatment of pain, along with additional topics considered essential for professionals working in companion animal health and welfare worldwide.

What Is the WSAVA Certificate in Pain Management?

The WSAVA Certificate in Pain Management is a multi-module program designed to elevate the standard of pain recognition and treatment in veterinary medicine.

To earn the full certificate, veterinarians must successfully complete three intensive modules (I, II, and III) over the course of approximately 18 months, each focused on evidence-based, multimodal approaches to pain management.

Dr. Jacobson completed Module I previously and will begin the final Module III in January, working toward completion of the full WSAVA Certificate.

Module II: Advanced Principles of Pain Management

Module II focuses on both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies for managing pain across a wide range of clinical scenarios. Topics include:

  • Principles of pain assessment and multimodal pain management
  • Advanced analgesic drug delivery techniques
  • Opioids, anti-inflammatory medications, and local anesthetics
  • Alpha-2 agonists and monoclonal antibody therapies
  • Adjunctive analgesic drugs and musculoskeletal therapies
  • Nursing, supportive care, and environmental considerations
  • Pain management in cats and dogs at home and in the clinic
  • Nutrition, rehabilitation, and non-pharmacological therapies
  • Common misconceptions in pain management

The module is taught by internationally recognized leaders in veterinary anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, rehabilitation, and behavioral medicine.
