Dr. Jacobson was interviewed for an article about the effect that corporate consolidation is having on veterinary medicine. Anna Claire Vollers, of Stateline, reached him for his perspective as a member on the Board of Directors for the Independent Veterinary Practitioner's Association. While he may not characterize himself as "fretting," Dr. Jacobson is very passionate that the best care for animals comes from independent, locally-owned veterinary practices. In the article, he discusses that corporitazation of veterinary medicine has actually lead to increased costs for consumers as private equity stakeholders see veterinary medicine as a profit center. Private equity-backed corporate chains are often very good at hiding the fact that they now-own and operate formerly private practices. While Iowa Code mandates that veterinary businesses be owned by veterinarians, large corporate entities continue to buy up and operate clinics in our state despite the letter of the law.
